My aunt sent my a post from ReadWriteStart, a resource for entrepreneurs and start-ups from Microsoft BizSpark. “Why We Need Tech Events for Women” addresses the very essence of the title. The technology industry is a male dominated one, so why not create conferences and workshops to educate and encourage female participation? Some conferences tackle blogging, others address the general topic of technology and its opportunities for women, some are for kids and young adults, and some are for professionals. Check ‘em out; who knows, you could become the next Bill Gates…

Come join us for an evening of training relevant to any start-up. Whether you’re a start-up company or not, these principals apply to all companies – especially in these tough economic times. We will cover two topics during the evening:
1) Top 10 Business Planning Mistakes: Submitting a Winning Plan to Investors, Banks, Business Partners, etc…
The business plan experts from Palo Alto Software will discuss the top 10 mistakes made in the business planing process. Learn how to avoid these mistakes and create a truly buzz worthy business plan. The competition is fierce and you owe it to yourself to present the best business plan you can.
2) Accounting: Financial Statements and Forecasting for Growing Companies
Expert accountants from Moss Adams, LLP with knowledge in the emerging-growth business space will be leading this section of the workshop. Accounting is pure overhead and won’t help you increase revenue, but if you spend your resources wisely then your accounting information can help you make decisions and save money. A poor accounting system or lack of financial statements could be detrimental to both your bottom line and your ability to attract funding.
The presentation will focus on how you can make sure you have financial records that will be ready for due diligence by potential investors or helping you secure business loans or partners. We’ll start with your day-to-day accounting and hit the main points all the way through to the 5-yr forecast focusing on cost effective processes for small companies.

eDev to sponsor Economic Stimulus grant
presentations and workshops in rural Lane County
eDev will be sponsoring five presentations and workshops in rural Lane County to provide an opportunity for businesses, non-profit organizations, and individuals to better understand the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (popularly known as the Economic Stimulus Act) and to learn how to apply for the grants.
The two hour presentations will focus on the Economic Stimulus Act and other federal grants that are available.
The four hour workshops will include presentations on both the Economic Stimulus Act and other federal grants. Workshops will also cover the key elements of a grant. Grant workshop attendees will be using laptop computers provided by eDev (formerly known as Lane MicroBusiness) to search for potential grants and to begin initial work on their grant applications.
There is no cost for the presentations. The four hour workshops are free to individuals who fall below the HUD income guidelines. For example, a single member household who earns below $31,100 and a two-member household which earns less than $35,500 can attend the workshops without cost providing they provide income verification. For individuals who are above the income guidelines, the cost is $70 for the workshop. If you have questions about whether or not you qualify, please call Juli at 541-463-4627.
The five hour grant workshops will focus on the following elements:
1] Communicate with government agencies
2] Locate grants
3] Understand what is the intent of the government
4] Eligibility requirements
5] Need to obtain partners
6] Understand competition for the grants
7] Understand what is being requested in the grant application
8] Understand the deliverables. How will your organization meet the deliverables?
9] Cost share
10] Principal investigators
11] How to assemble a budget
12] Understand the review criteria
13] Understand the selection process and the lag time for the award
14] Award notices
